Be You

“No one is you and that is your power”

I love that quote and when it comes to being a creative, I think there is nothing more true and it is something you should be reminding yourself of every day. No one can be you.

I have seen photographers arguing over a location that was public property because they took similar shots of it. One thought the other stole his shot, or idea, because he took the photo first. Filmmakers copying how another edits. I think this can happen in any medium of creativity whether you are a writer, painter, musician etcetera.

I feel like there are two sides to this. I think when you are learning, copying another is perfectly okay, even important. One way I learned studio lighting was by emulating a magazine cover. I would take the picture, study it and shoot the picture as exact as I could to learn how they lit their subject. There is a line though, and I think maybe the simplest way to look at that line is, if you start making money off of ideas you are getting from someone else, it’s time to take a step back.

I believe we can all learn from each other. Whether you have been doing what you are doing for 30 years or 3 days there is something to be learned. So don’t be afraid to emulate someone who inspires you. On the flip side don’t be afraid to help someone out who is learning, you might just learn something new yourself in the process. Don’t forget to give credit where credit is due and don’t forget to take a step back every now and again. Most of all, don’t forget to just be you, because no one else can be you better.

So emulate others, learn what you need to learn, then move on.

In the words of James Bay “why don’t you be you and I’ll be me.”

Be uniquely you.

Happy Tuesday!

I like this! This is especially true in the blogging world where lots of people are doing the same thing. We all want to stand out and it’s like you said, emulate others and move on.

Thank you! Ya I think it is easy to get caught up when you find someone who inspires you, and that is definitely ok, but knowing when it is time to put your own spin on things is the trick 🙂
